Our Story

Medical Consulting Group

Medical Consulting Group was founded in 1989 by managing principal Bill Rabourn and others as a small, three-person operation called MedSource. The company initially focused on ophthalmic business strategy, marketing, mergers, and business operations but soon expanded to serving medical practices, ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs), and medical device businesses. In 1995, the growing company became Medical Consulting Group and acquired the expertise of three new managing principals: Stephen Sheppard, CPA, COE; Robert McCarville, MPA; and Erin Malloy.

In 2023, MCG merged with San Bernardino, California based Corcoran Consulting Group, which specialized in coding and reimbursement issues for ophthalmology and optometry practices. The combined company is now the leading provider of business services for ophthalmic practices, ASCs, and medical corporations throughout the U.S. and Canada.

1989

Bill Rabourn co-founds an ophthalmic consulting company in Springfield, Missouri, called MedSource, Inc. The business is focused on providing marketing, educational, and creative materials to clients practicing refractive and small incision cataract surgery.

1995

MedSource, Inc. is divided and sold with half of the company reorganizing as Medical Consulting Group (MCG).

1999

MCG begins offering business consulting solutions for ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) by partnering with principal Stephen Sheppard, CPA, COE.

2002

Principal Robert McCarville, MPA, joins MCG allowing the company to expand its service offerings to include revenue cycle management and professional management consulting services.

2005

MCG expands its client base to include excimer laser surgery centers for laser vision correction, which drives growth for the company.

2006

With increased growth, MCG moves into a new Springfield, Missouri-based facility.

2007

MCG begins offering PatientBuilder, a turnkey marketing solution for ophthalmic corporations and medical practices.

2008

Company begins providing accounting services to ASC’s and practices.

2011

MCG begins taking an ownership stake in some of the ambulatory surgery centers it develops.

2020

MCG retains and pays all employees during the dark days of COVID.

2022

MCG marks a milestone with clients now in 44 U.S. states and Canada.

2023

MCG acquires San Bernadino, California-based Corcoran Consulting Group, a leader in ophthalmic medical billing and reimbursement, and moves into its new Springfield, Missouri-based facility to accommodate continued growth.

2025

MCG begins a strategic collaboration with CRM Group Marketing, combining resources to strengthen digital marketing support for ophthalmology clients.
